The house wasn't old and it wasn't historic — a 1998 build, structurally sound but organized around a floor plan that closed every room off from the next one, with a stair that felt like an afterthought in the center of the house.
We opened the center of the plan to the roofline, replacing a dropped ceiling with a genuine two-story volume anchored by a book-matched stone fireplace that runs the full height. The new stair is white oak and blackened steel, floating rather than boxed, and it became the thing every visitor comments on first.
Structurally, this meant a new steel beam spanning what had been three separate rooms — engineered, permitted and installed in a single eleven-hour day to minimize the time the house was open to the weather.
The clients moved out for the structural phase and back in for finishes, which let us work six days a week without disrupting anyone's sleep. Jonah's schedule held within four days of the original nine-month estimate, unusual for a project of this scope.
What had been a competent but forgettable house is now, by a wide margin, the one on the street people ask to see inside.
