A library where there used to be a hallway and a closet

The house had a formal hallway nobody used and a coat closet nobody needed, side by side and separated by a non-structural wall. Removing that wall gave us a single room, twelve by fifteen feet, with two windows that had never had proper trim.

Every piece of millwork — the shelving, the paneling, the window seat with hidden storage beneath it — was built in our North Charleston shop by the same three cabinetmakers, then installed as finished assemblies rather than built in place. The joinery is traditional mortise-and-tenon where it's load-bearing, which is why the shelves don't sag under a full run of hardcover books the way stock shelving does within a year.

The paneling is painted, not stained — a deliberate choice against the current trend toward exposed wood everywhere, because this room needed to feel quiet rather than busy, and a single soft color lets the books and the window light do the work.

The window seat's cushion was the last decision made on the project, chosen from six fabric swatches taped to the bare wood for a week so the family could see it in morning and evening light before committing.
