A roastery on the water.
Halden started in 2016 in a 400-square-foot garage bay two blocks from Portland’s working waterfront. We’re still on Commercial St., just with a bigger roaster and a lot more burlap sacks.

Small batches, on purpose.
We roast three days a week, in batches small enough that Nora tastes every one before it ships. That means we sometimes sell out of a lot before the next harvest — we’d rather run out than roast coffee we wouldn’t drink ourselves.
Every bag carries its actual roast date, not a “best by” guess, and ships within 48 hours of coming off the drum.
Sourced with people we know.
We buy green coffee from importers we’ve worked with for years, and pay above commodity price on every lot. Where we can, we buy back into the same farms and cooperatives year over year — this year’s Guji should taste like a better version of last year’s, not a replacement for it.

Common questions
How fast do you ship, and what does it cost?
Orders roasted and packed within 2 business days, shipped USPS or UPS ground. Standard shipping is $6.50 and free on orders over $40. Express (2–3 days) is $14. Most East Coast orders arrive in 3–5 days; West Coast can take up to 7.
How fresh is the coffee when it ships?
We roast in small batches out of our Commercial St. roastery three days a week and ship within 48 hours of roasting. Every bag is stamped with its roast date — not a "best by" date, the actual day it left the drum.
Can I choose the grind?
Yes. Every coffee (except gift cards) offers Whole bean, Drip grind, Espresso grind, or French press at checkout, with no upcharge. If you brew more than one way, whole bean and grinding fresh at home gets you the most out of the coffee.
How does Roaster's Choice work, and can I skip a shipment?
Pick your bag count (1–3), frequency (every 2 or 4 weeks) and grind. You can skip, swap the coffee, or change frequency any time from your account before a shipment's cutoff — no phone call needed. Subscriptions also ship free and save 10% off single-bag pricing.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Any time, from your account, no minimum commitment and no cancellation fee. If a bag's already roasted for you, it ships as your last one.
What are your wholesale minimums?
Cafés and restaurants start at 20 lb/month across any mix of our blends or single origins, billed net-30 after the first order. Below that we're happy to set you up on a smaller trial order first — ask in the wholesale form.
Do you help wholesale accounts with equipment and training?
Yes — new wholesale accounts get a training visit from Maya, our wholesale lead, covering dial-in and machine calibration, and we loan espresso equipment for qualifying volume commitments. Details depend on your setup; the inquiry form asks what you're working with.
What's your return policy?
If a bag arrives damaged or isn't what you ordered, email us within 14 days and we'll replace it or refund it, no questions asked. Because coffee is perishable we can't accept opened-bag returns for taste preference alone — that's what our tasting notes and the "Only 5 left" honesty on stock are for.
How do gift cards work?
Gift cards are delivered by email with a code, in $25, $50 or $100 denominations, and never expire. They cover anything in the store, including subscriptions.
How should I store the beans once they arrive?
In the bag, folded or clipped shut, in a cabinet away from light and heat — not the freezer, not the fridge. Coffee is best within 3–4 weeks of the roast date; grinding just before brewing keeps it tasting like it did on day one.
